AWE
Daily Journey 8
AWE
When You Remember Who God Is
Theme: Awe begins when we see God rightly—and seeing His greatness helps us understand both our smallness and our extraordinary value to Him.
Pause
Yesterday, David was surrounded by injustice.
Today, he looks up.
Sometimes that’s exactly what we need to do.
We spend so much time looking at what is happening around us that we forget to look at the One who reigns above us.
David looks into the night sky.
The moon.
The stars.
The vastness of creation.
And suddenly his problems are no longer the biggest thing in view.
Before reading today’s Psalm, become still.
Think about the greatness of the God who created everything you can see—and everything you cannot.
Then consider this remarkable truth:
The God who created it all is mindful of you.
Prayer
Father, lift my eyes today. I become so consumed with my circumstances that I sometimes lose sight of Your greatness. Help me see Your glory in creation, recognize Your majesty, and stand in awe that the God who formed the heavens also knows and cares for me. Give me a proper view of You so I can have a proper view of myself. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Scripture
Today’s Psalm invites us to look beyond ourselves, behold the majesty of God, and marvel that the Creator of everything chooses to know, value, and care for us.
Psalm 8 (ESV)
“O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?
Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet,
all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”
— Psalm 8:1–9 (ESV)
Read It Again
Read Psalm 8 slowly.
Notice where David begins and ends:
“O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”
Everything between those two declarations flows from one overwhelming reality:
God is majestic.
Now notice the contrast.
The heavens are enormous.
Human beings are small.
God is infinitely glorious.
Yet He is mindful of us.
Ask yourself:
What does this Psalm reveal about God’s heart?
When did I last slow down long enough to stand in awe of God?
Have my problems become bigger in my thoughts than my view of God?
What does it mean to me that God is mindful of me?
Am I faithfully caring for what God has entrusted to me?
Don’t rush past David’s question:
“What is man that you are mindful of him?”
Let the wonder of that question settle into your heart.
Pursuing His Heart
Today’s Revelation of God’s Heart
God’s heart reveals both immeasurable majesty and astonishing care—the Creator of the heavens is mindful of us.
Carry this truth with you throughout today’s journey.
Psalm 8 changes our perspective by changing where we look.
David looks upward.
And what he sees overwhelms him.
The heavens.
The moon.
The stars.
Everything perfectly placed by the hand of God.
Yet notice how David describes creation.
He calls the heavens:
“the work of your fingers.”
What overwhelms David is merely the work of God’s fingers.
That’s how great God is.
Then David asks the question that naturally follows:
“What is man?”
Compared with the enormity of creation, we seem incredibly small.
Yet David doesn’t conclude that humanity is insignificant.
He discovers exactly the opposite.
God is mindful of us.
Think about that.
The God who placed the stars knows you.
The God whose glory stretches beyond the heavens sees you.
The God who created galaxies cares about what happens in your life.
You are small compared with creation…
but you are not insignificant to the Creator.
That distinction matters.
Humility says:
“The universe does not revolve around me.”
Grace says:
“Yet the God who created the universe cares for me.”
Both are true.
And when we hold those truths together, something beautiful happens.
Awe.
David then reminds us that human beings were given extraordinary dignity and responsibility. God crowned humanity with glory and honor and entrusted His creation to our care.
We were not created merely to consume God’s gifts.
We were created to steward them.
Our lives matter.
Our choices matter.
Our influence matters.
What God places in our hands matters.
But none of it exists primarily to make our names great.
Psalm 8 begins and ends with God’s name.
That’s the proper order.
Our lives find their greatest meaning when they point beyond ourselves to the majesty of the One who created us.
Seeing Jesus
Psalm 8 becomes even more beautiful when we see Jesus within it.
The New Testament returns to this Psalm when explaining who Christ is and what He has accomplished.
Jesus willingly humbled Himself and entered our humanity.
The eternal Son became one of us.
He experienced weakness, suffering, and death.
Yet through His resurrection and exaltation, Jesus was crowned with glory and honor.
Where humanity failed to fulfill God’s purposes perfectly, Jesus succeeded.
He is the true and perfect Man.
And because we belong to Christ, our dignity isn’t based on our achievements, possessions, titles, or the opinions of others.
Our identity is anchored in Him.
The majestic God who made the heavens came near to us in Jesus.
That should leave us in awe.
Truths to Hold Onto
God’s majesty extends throughout all creation.
Creation should direct our attention toward the Creator.
Human beings are small compared with creation but deeply valued by God.
God is mindful of us and cares for us.
Our worth is received from God, not achieved through performance.
God has entrusted us with responsibility for what He has placed in our care.
Our lives ultimately exist to bring glory to His name.
Life Application
Have you become so focused on your life that you’ve lost your awe of God?
Sometimes our problems don’t need to become smaller.
Our view of God needs to become bigger.
Look up.
Remember who He is.
Then remember:
That God is mindful of you.
Walking Deeper
Genesis 1:26–28 — Humanity is created in God’s image and entrusted with responsibility for His creation.
Hebrews 2:6–9 — The writer of Hebrews uses Psalm 8 to point us toward Jesus, crowned with glory and honor through His suffering.
Colossians 1:15–17 — All creation exists through Christ and for Christ, and He holds everything together.
Prayer Prompt
O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth. Forgive me for the times I make my circumstances bigger than my view of You. Lift my eyes again. Restore my wonder. Thank You that although You are infinitely greater than I can comprehend, You are mindful of me and care for me. Help me faithfully steward everything You have placed in my hands so that my life points others toward Your greatness. Amen.
Today’s Step
Go outside sometime today.
Leave your phone behind.
Spend at least ten uninterrupted minutes looking at God’s creation.
The sky.
The clouds.
The trees.
The stars, if it is evening.
Don’t ask God for anything.
Simply worship.
Then pray David’s words:
“O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”
And quietly remember:
The God who made all of this is mindful of me.
❤️ Heart Check
Head
What does the greatness of creation teach me about the greatness of God?
Heart
Have I allowed my circumstances, accomplishments, or concerns to become bigger than my view of God?
Hands
How can I faithfully steward something God has entrusted to me today?
Reflect. Evolve. Lead.
Reflect
My life becomes clearer when I see myself in light of God’s greatness rather than seeing God only through the lens of my circumstances.
Evolve
As my view of God grows, pride becomes humility, fear becomes trust, and ordinary life becomes worship.
Lead
Today I will remember that whatever influence, responsibility, or opportunity God has entrusted to me is stewardship—not ownership—and I will use it to point others toward Him.
Carry This With You
You may be small beneath the stars, but you are never insignificant to the God who placed them there.
Look up.
Stand in awe.
Walk humbly.
And never forget:
He is mindful of you.
Tomorrow’s Journey
Today you lifted your eyes and encountered the majesty of the God whose glory fills creation—yet whose heart remains mindful of you.
Tomorrow, David will show us what happens when awe becomes worship.
We will discover a heart that gives thanks, remembers God’s works, and declares His goodness even while enemies remain.
The God whose name is majestic in all the earth is also worthy of praise in every circumstance.
Until tomorrow…keep walking with Him.
One Daily Journey. One Psalm. One surrendered heart. One step closer to His heart.
