The Illusion of “When Then”

Day 10: The Illusion of “When Then”

Scripture:
“Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income.” — Ecclesiastes 5:10 (NIV)

Reflection:
We often live in “when-then” thinking.

When this happens…
Then I’ll feel at peace.

When I reach that goal…
Then I’ll be satisfied.

But “when-then” is a moving target.

Because once you arrive… the target shifts.

What you thought would satisfy you becomes your new baseline.

And what once felt like a dream becomes an expectation.

Ecclesiastes exposes this cycle clearly:
The pursuit itself keeps expanding.

It’s not just about money—it’s about anything you believe will finally be enough.

Success.
Recognition.
Stability.
Even personal growth.

If your fulfillment is tied to a future condition, it will always stay just out of reach.

Because contentment is not found in arrival.

It is found in alignment.

Alignment with God—right where you are.

Observation:
“Arrival thinking” delays contentment.
Fulfillment tied to circumstances will always shift.
Contentment comes from alignment with God.

Life Application:
What are you telling yourself has to happen before you can feel at peace?

Scripture Connections:
Philippians 4:11–12 – “I have learned to be content…”
Luke 12:15 – “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed…”
Hebrews 13:5 – “Be content with what you have…”

Prayer Prompt:
God, free me from believing that peace is somewhere in the future. Teach me to find contentment in You today.

Action Step:
Notice one moment today where you feel “I’ll be okay when…” and replace it with gratitude for what God has already provided.
