The Deception of Control
Day 9: The Deception of Control
Scripture:
“Who can straighten what He has made crooked?” — Ecclesiastes 7:13 (NIV)
Reflection:
Control feels like safety.
If you can manage the outcome…
Predict the future…
Minimize uncertainty…
Then maybe you can avoid disappointment.
But control is often an illusion we cling to when life feels unpredictable.
Ecclesiastes reminds us: there are realities shaped by God that we cannot override.
And yet, we try.
We try to control people’s responses.
Control timing.
Control outcomes.
But the tighter we hold, the more anxious we become.
Because deep down, we know—we are not in control.
And that realization can either produce fear… or freedom.
Fear, if you believe everything depends on you.
Freedom, if you trust that it doesn’t.
Surrender is not giving up responsibility—it’s releasing the illusion of control.
Because peace is not found in managing everything.
It’s found in trusting the One who already does.
Observation:
Control is often an illusion.
Clinging to control increases anxiety.
Surrender leads to peace.
Life Application:
What are you trying to control that may be keeping you in anxiety?
Scripture Connections:
Proverbs 16:9 – “In their hearts humans plan their course…”
Matthew 6:27 – “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour…?”
Isaiah 26:3 – “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast…”
Prayer Prompt:
Lord, help me release my need for control. Teach me to trust You with what I cannot manage.
Action Step:
When you feel anxious today, ask: “What am I trying to control right now?” Then release it to God.
