SHEPHERD
Daily Journey 23
SHEPHERD
When His Presence Is Enough
Theme
The answer to yesterday’s darkness is not always an explanation. Sometimes it is the presence of the Shepherd walking beside us.
Pause
Yesterday, Psalm 22 cried:
“My God, why?”
Today, Psalm 23 begins:
“The Lord is my shepherd.”
That transition is beautiful.
Not every question receives an immediate explanation.
But the heart can still discover:
I am not alone.
Read those opening words personally:
The Lord is my shepherd.
Prayer
Shepherd of my soul, lead me today. Quiet what is restless, restore what is weary, guide what is uncertain, and remind me that no valley is empty when You are there. Amen.
Scripture
Today’s Psalm invites us to entrust every need, path, valley, table, and future to the faithful care of our Shepherd.
Psalm 23
The Lord Is My Shepherd
A Psalm of David.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.[a]
3 He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness[b]
for his name's sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,[c]
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely[d] goodness and mercy[e] shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell[f] in the house of the Lord
forever.[g]
Read It Again
Notice the movement.
Pastures.
Waters.
Paths.
Valley.
Table.
Home.
Ask:
Which setting best describes my life today?
Do I trust the Shepherd in valleys as much as in green pastures?
Where do I need restoration?
What changes when I realize He is with me?
Pursuing His Heart
Today’s Revelation of God’s Heart
God’s heart is that of a faithful Shepherd who provides, restores, guides, protects, accompanies, and welcomes His people home.
Psalm 23 does not promise permanent green pastures.
There are valleys too.
That matters.
Following the Shepherd does not mean every path will feel peaceful.
It means every path has purpose and presence.
David’s confidence in the valley comes down to four words:
“You are with me.”
Not:
I understand.
Not:
I enjoy this.
Not:
I know when it ends.
You are with me.
Yesterday, we learned that lament can say:
“My God.”
Today we discover why:
The Shepherd never left.
Sometimes God’s greatest gift in the valley is not an explanation.
It is Himself.
Seeing Jesus
Jesus identifies Himself as the Good Shepherd.
And He goes even further than Psalm 23.
The Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.
He does not send us through death’s shadow from a distance.
He has already walked through death Himself.
And He came out victorious.
We can follow Him because He knows the way.
Truths to Hold Onto
God provides what we truly need.
God restores weary souls.
God guides rightly.
Valleys do not mean the Shepherd has disappeared.
God’s presence is greater than our fear.
Our journey ultimately ends in His presence.
Life Application
Are you asking God primarily to remove your valley—or learning to recognize the Shepherd within it?
Walking Deeper
Isaiah 40:11 — God gently gathers and leads His flock.
John 10:11–18 — Jesus identifies Himself as the Good Shepherd.
Revelation 7:17 — The Lamb becomes the Shepherd who leads His people to living water.
Prayer Prompt
Good Shepherd, I trust Your leadership even when I do not understand the path. Restore my soul, guide my steps, calm my fears, and make me conscious of Your presence today. Amen.
Today’s Step
Read Psalm 23 slowly aloud.
After each verse, say:
“I trust You, Shepherd.”
❤️ Heart Check
Head
What does God being my Shepherd reveal about His character?
Heart
Where am I resisting the path He has allowed?
Hands
How can I follow His leading instead of demanding my own way?
Reflect. Evolve. Lead.
Reflect
The Shepherd’s presence matters more than the valley’s darkness.
Evolve
Trust grows as I follow even when I cannot see far ahead.
Lead
Today I will shepherd those entrusted to me with patience, protection, provision, and care.
Carry This With You
You do not need to know the entire path when you know the Shepherd.
Tomorrow’s Journey
Today you followed the Shepherd through every kind of terrain.
Tomorrow, Psalm 24 lifts our eyes again.
The Shepherd is also the King of glory.
The One walking beside you owns the earth beneath your feet.
And Psalm 24 will ask:
If He is truly King, what part of my life still needs to open to Him?
Until tomorrow…keep walking with Him.
One Daily Journey. One Psalm. One surrendered heart. One step closer to His heart.
