PORTION

When God Becomes Enough

Theme: The deeper this journey goes, the more we discover that God is not merely the giver of good things—He is the greatest treasure we could ever receive.

Pause

Yesterday, Psalm 15 showed us what integrity looks like when faith becomes visible in everyday life.

Today, Psalm 16 asks us to go deeper.

Integrity answers:

How should I live?

Psalm 16 asks:

What do I treasure most?

David looks at everything that could give him security and says something remarkable:

The Lord is my portion.

Before reading, think about the things you believe you must have in order to feel secure, fulfilled, or at peace.

Then quietly pray:

“Lord, teach me to find my deepest satisfaction in You.”

Prayer

Father, I confess that I sometimes look to possessions, relationships, achievements, plans, and circumstances to give me what only You can provide. Teach me to say with David that You are my portion. Become my greatest treasure, my deepest security, and my lasting joy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Scripture

Today’s Psalm invites us to discover that the greatest gift God gives us is not simply what comes from His hand—it is God Himself.

Psalm 16

You Will Not Abandon My Soul

A Miktam[a] of David.

Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.

2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;    I have no good apart from you.”

3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,    in whom is all my delight.[b]

4 The sorrows of those who run after[c] another god shall multiply;    their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out    or take their names on my lips.

5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;    you hold my lot.

6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;    indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;    in the night also my heart instructs me.[d]

8 I have set the Lord always before me;    because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being[e] rejoices;    my flesh also dwells secure.

10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,    or let your holy one see corruption.[f]

11 You make known to me the path of life;    in your presence there is fullness of joy;    at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Read It Again

Read Psalm 16 slowly.

Notice the language David uses:

Refuge.

Portion.

Cup.

Counsel.

Right hand.

Joy.

Life.

Ask yourself:

  • What does this Psalm reveal about God’s heart?

  • What am I depending upon for security?

  • What does it mean for God to be my portion?

  • Where have I been looking for lasting joy apart from Him?

  • If everything else changed, would I still believe God was enough?

Pursuing His Heart

Today’s Revelation of God’s Heart

God’s heart is to become the deepest security, greatest treasure, and lasting joy of those who take refuge in Him.

Carry this truth with you throughout today’s journey.

David says:

“The Lord is my chosen portion.”

A portion was someone’s inheritance.

What belonged to them.

What gave them security.

David looks at everything that could define his future and says:

God is enough.

Not because David possesses God.

But because knowing God has become more valuable to him than everything God could give.

That changes the way we live.

If your deepest treasure is something you can lose, fear will always be nearby.

But when God becomes your portion, your greatest treasure cannot be taken away.

David also says that in God’s presence there is fullness of joy.

Perhaps much of our restlessness comes from asking temporary things to satisfy eternal longings.

We tell ourselves:

When I achieve this…

When I own that…

When this relationship changes…

When this problem disappears…

Then I’ll finally be content.

David discovered something better.

God Himself is the treasure.

And when God becomes enough, everything else finds its proper place.

Seeing Jesus

Psalm 16 points beautifully toward Christ.

The New Testament connects David’s words about not being abandoned to the grave with the resurrection of Jesus.

Jesus died.

But death could not hold Him.

Because Christ lives, our inheritance is secure.

Our future does not end at the grave.

And our greatest hope is not a better version of this temporary life.

Our hope is eternal life with Him.

Through Jesus, we receive the greatest gift possible:

God Himself.

Truths to Hold Onto

  • God is our safest refuge.

  • God Himself is our greatest inheritance.

  • Lasting joy is found in His presence.

  • Security grows when our greatest treasure cannot be taken away.

  • Jesus’ resurrection guarantees that death does not have the final word.

Life Application

If God removed something you currently consider essential to your happiness, would you still believe He was enough?

Walking Deeper

  • Lamentations 3:24 — The soul can declare that the Lord Himself is its portion.

  • John 15:11 — Jesus desires His joy to be in us and our joy to become full.

  • Acts 2:25–32 — Peter connects Psalm 16 with the resurrection of Jesus.

Prayer Prompt

Lord, become more precious to me than anything You could give me. Teach me to find my security in Your presence, my joy in knowing You, and my hope in the life You have promised through Christ. Amen.

Today’s Step

Write down three things you are afraid to lose.

Then ask:

“If this changed, would God still be enough?”

Pray over each one.

Finish by saying:

“Lord, You are my portion.”

❤️ Heart Check

Head

What does it mean for God to be my portion?

Heart

What am I depending upon to give me the security only God can provide?

Hands

What choice today would demonstrate that God matters more than what I possess?

Reflect. Evolve. Lead.

Reflect

God is not merely the giver of my blessings; He is my greatest blessing.

Evolve

As God becomes my treasure, fear loses its power over what I might lose.

Lead

Today I will lead from gratitude rather than scarcity, remembering that my deepest security is already found in God.

Carry This With You

When God becomes your portion, your greatest treasure becomes something the world cannot take away.

Tomorrow’s Journey

Today you discovered that God Himself is your portion.

And when God becomes your treasure, another question naturally follows:

Can you trust Him to keep you?

Tomorrow, David will ask God to guard him as the apple of His eye and shelter him beneath the shadow of His wings.

The God who is enough for you is also near enough to keep you.

Until tomorrow…keep walking with Him.

One Daily Journey. One Psalm. One surrendered heart. One step closer to His heart.
