The First Step

Theme: Every journey after God’s own heart begins with one decision—to delight in Him above everything else.

Pause

Every journey begins somewhere.

Before David teaches us how to worship, wait, repent, endure, or praise, Psalm 1 asks us to consider the direction of our lives.

Where are you planted?

What is shaping you?

What do you delight in?

Before you open God’s Word, become still before the Lord.

The world constantly competes for your attention. Responsibilities, distractions, worries, opinions, and desires can begin shaping your heart before you even realize it.

But today, God invites you to something different.

He invites you into His presence.

Take a slow breath.

Quiet your heart.

Ask the Holy Spirit to prepare you—not merely to understand God’s Word, but to be transformed by it.

Prayer

Father, as I begin this journey through the Psalms, prepare my heart to know You more deeply. Give me ears to hear Your voice, eyes to see Your truth, and a heart that delights in Your presence. Plant me deeply in Your Word and shape me until my heart increasingly reflects Yours. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Scripture

Today’s Psalm invites us to discover that the blessed life begins with a heart planted deeply in God and delighted in His Word.

Psalm 1 (ESV)

Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;

but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers

The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;

for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

Read It Again

Read Psalm 1 slowly a second time.

Notice the contrasts:

Walking, standing, sitting.

Delighting and drifting.

Tree and chaff.

Rooted and blown away.

Two ways of living.

Two directions.

Two destinations.

Ask yourself:

• What does this Psalm reveal about God’s heart?

• What has been shaping my heart most recently?

• Where do I see spiritual roots growing?

• Where might I be slowly drifting?

• What does it mean for me to delight in God’s Word rather than merely read it?

Don’t rush.

The first step in this journey is not movement.

It is deciding where you will be planted.

Pursuing His Heart

Today’s Revelation of God’s Heart

God’s heart is to nourish, establish, and bless those whose lives are rooted in Him.

Carry this truth with you throughout today’s journey.

Psalm 1 begins with blessing.

That matters.

God’s desire is not to make our lives smaller, emptier, or less meaningful.

He invites us toward life.

But the blessed life described here is very different from the life the world often celebrates.

The world says blessing is found in having more.

More recognition.

More money.

More influence.

More comfort.

More control.

Psalm 1 says blessing begins much deeper.

It begins with roots.

The person pursuing God’s heart learns to delight in His truth.

Not merely tolerate it.

Not occasionally consult it.

Delight in it.

God’s Word becomes nourishment.

Direction.

Correction.

Wisdom.

Comfort.

The Psalm then gives us one of Scripture’s most beautiful pictures:

A tree planted beside streams of water.

The tree does not survive because seasons never change.

It survives because its source remains.

Heat comes.

Storms arrive.

Seasons shift.

Yet the roots keep drawing life from somewhere deeper.

That is God’s heart for you.

He does not promise that every season will feel easy.

He offers something better:

A life whose source is deeper than its circumstances.

But Psalm 1 also gives us a warning.

Drifting usually happens gradually.

Walk.

Stand.

Sit.

One compromise.

One influence.

One decision.

Eventually a direction becomes a destination.

The opposite is also true.

One prayer.

One surrendered choice.

One morning in God’s Word.

One act of obedience.

One day at a time.

Roots grow quietly.

And eventually…

fruit appears.

So the first question of this entire journey is simple:

Where are you planting your heart?

Seeing Jesus

Jesus is the perfectly righteous Man Psalm 1 describes.

He delighted completely in the Father’s will.

He resisted every temptation.

He remained faithful in every season.

He bore fruit that continues bringing life to the world.

Where we wander, Jesus remained faithful.

Where we fail, He obeyed perfectly.

And through His death and resurrection, we are not merely told to become better trees through greater effort.

We are invited into His life.

Jesus later describes this relationship as abiding in Him.

Branches bear fruit because they remain connected to the vine.

The Christian life does not begin with striving harder.

It begins with remaining closer.

Truths to Hold Onto

• Every life is being shaped by something.

• Spiritual drift happens gradually.

• God’s Word nourishes hearts that delight in it.

• Deep roots create stability through changing seasons.

• Spiritual fruit grows from abiding, not striving.

• Jesus is the source of the life we cannot produce ourselves.

Life Application

If someone observed the rhythms of your life this past week, what would they conclude delights your heart most?

Not what you say matters most.

What receives your attention?

Your time?

Your thoughts?

Your affection?

That reveals where your roots are growing.

Walking Deeper

• Joshua 1:8 — God connects meditation on His Word with faithful, wise living.

• Jeremiah 17:7–8 — Those who trust the Lord are compared to trees whose roots reach water even during drought.

• John 15:1–11 — Jesus teaches that lasting fruit comes through abiding in Him.

Prayer Prompt

Lord, plant my life deeply in You. Let Your Word become more than something I read. Let it shape my thoughts, desires, decisions, and direction. Protect me from subtle drift and grow roots within me that remain strong through every season. Produce fruit in my life that reflects Your heart and brings glory to You. Amen.

Today’s Step

Spend fifteen uninterrupted minutes with God today.

Turn off every distraction.

Read Psalm 1 again.

Then sit quietly and ask:

“Lord, where do You want to deepen my roots?”

Write down what comes to mind.

Then identify one influence that strengthens your walk with God and one influence that may be quietly pulling you away.

Nurture one.

Surrender the other.

As God’s Word becomes nourishment rather than obligation, He changes me from the inside out.

Today I will model a rooted life—one marked by steadiness, faithfulness, and fruit rather than constant reaction to circumstances.

Carry This With You

Before asking your life to bear more fruit, allow God to grow deeper roots.

Stay planted.

Stay nourished.

Stay close.

Tomorrow’s Journey

Today you began by asking:

Where is my heart planted?

Tomorrow brings another foundational question:

Who rules it?

Psalm 2 will introduce us to the King whose authority cannot be threatened, overturned, or outlasted.

A rooted heart must eventually become a surrendered heart.

The journey has begun.

Now we must decide who will lead it.

Until tomorrow…keep walking with Him.
