HEARING VS. DOING
DAY 6 — HEARING VS. DOING
Scripture
Matthew 7:24–27
James 1:22–25
Luke 6:46
Reflection
Jesus ends His teaching in Matthew 7 with a comparison that defines everything:
Two people hear His words.
One builds on rock.
The other builds on sand.
The difference is not what they heard—
It is what they did.
“Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does them…” (Matthew 7:24)
The foundation of a life is not built on knowledge, but obedience.
James reinforces this:
“Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22)
That word—deceiving—is important.
It means we can convince ourselves that:
because we know the truth
because we agree with the truth
because we can explain the truth
…we are living in truth.
But Jesus asks a direct question:
“Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I tell you?” (Luke 6:46)
Hearing without doing creates a false sense of security.
It builds a life that looks stable—until pressure comes.
And it will come.
Storms reveal foundations.
Not how much you know.
Not what you say you believe.
But whether your life is built on obedience to Christ.
Challenge
Where am I hearing truth but not fully obeying it?
Prayer
Lord, don’t let me settle for hearing Your Word without living it. Give me the courage to obey, even when it is difficult. Build my life on a foundation that will stand.
