REFUGE
Daily Journey 31
REFUGE
Into Your Hands
Theme
Trust becomes deepest when we place what matters most into God’s hands.
Pause
There are moments when we simply cannot hold everything together.
Psalm 31 gives us another option.
Put it into God’s hands.
Prayer
Father, I entrust myself to You. My future, fears, reputation, relationships, unanswered questions, and everything beyond my control belong in Your hands. Be my refuge. Amen.
Scripture
Today’s Psalm invites us to place our lives, times, fears, and future into the hands of the faithful God who sees our distress and becomes our refuge.
Psalm 31 (ESV)
Into Your Hand I Commit My Spirit
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.
In you, O Lord, do I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame;
in your righteousness deliver me!
2 Incline your ear to me;
rescue me speedily!
Be a rock of refuge for me,
a strong fortress to save me!
3 For you are my rock and my fortress;
and for your name's sake you lead me and guide me;
4 you take me out of the net they have hidden for me,
for you are my refuge.
5 Into your hand I commit my spirit;
you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.
6 I hate[a] those who pay regard to worthless idols,
but I trust in the Lord.
7 I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love,
because you have seen my affliction;
you have known the distress of my soul,
8 and you have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy;
you have set my feet in a broad place.
9 Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am in distress;
my eye is wasted from grief;
my soul and my body also.
10 For my life is spent with sorrow,
and my years with sighing;
my strength fails because of my iniquity,
and my bones waste away.
11 Because of all my adversaries I have become a reproach,
especially to my neighbors,
and an object of dread to my acquaintances;
those who see me in the street flee from me.
12 I have been forgotten like one who is dead;
I have become like a broken vessel.
13 For I hear the whispering of many—
terror on every side!—
as they scheme together against me,
as they plot to take my life.
14 But I trust in you, O Lord;
I say, “You are my God.”
15 My times are in your hand;
rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors!
16 Make your face shine on your servant;
save me in your steadfast love!
17 O Lord, let me not be put to shame,
for I call upon you;
let the wicked be put to shame;
let them go silently to Sheol.
18 Let the lying lips be mute,
which speak insolently against the righteous
in pride and contempt.
19 Oh, how abundant is your goodness,
which you have stored up for those who fear you
and worked for those who take refuge in you,
in the sight of the children of mankind!
20 In the cover of your presence you hide them
from the plots of men;
you store them in your shelter
from the strife of tongues.
21 Blessed be the Lord,
for he has wondrously shown his steadfast love to me
when I was in a besieged city.
22 I had said in my alarm,[b]
“I am cut off from your sight.”
But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy
when I cried to you for help.
23 Love the Lord, all you his saints!
The Lord preserves the faithful
but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride.
24 Be strong, and let your heart take courage,
all you who wait for the Lord!
Read It Again
Read Psalm 31 again and notice how often David moves between distress and trust.
He feels grief, pressure, rejection, and fear.
Yet he repeatedly returns to refuge, steadfast love, and the faithfulness of God.
Pay special attention to the ideas of God’s hands and God’s presence.
Ask yourself:
● What am I trying to keep in my own hands?
● Where do I feel forgotten or misunderstood?
● What changes when I remember that my times belong to God?
● What would courageous trust look like today?
Pursuing His Heart
Today’s Revelation of God’s Heart
God’s heart is a refuge for those who entrust themselves completely to Him.
David experiences grief, opposition, rejection, and fear.
Yet he says:
My times are in Your hand.
What a statement.
My times.
My seasons.
My future.
My life.
Not in circumstances.
Not in another person’s opinion.
Not in my ability to predict tomorrow.
In Your hand.
Carry this truth with you throughout today’s journey.
David’s circumstances are not tidy.
He is not offering a polished testimony from the other side of the trouble.
He is praying from inside it.
Yet he places the most personal thing he possesses—his very life—into God’s hands.
That is refuge.
Refuge is not pretending danger is absent.
It is choosing where to stand while danger is present.
David also says his times are in God’s hand.
That means the season he cannot control is still held.
The future he cannot see is still held.
The reputation he cannot fully defend is still held.
Trust loosens our grip because it remembers whose grip is stronger.
Seeing Jesus
From the cross, Jesus entrusted Himself to the Father using the language of this Psalm.
At the moment when everything appeared lost, Jesus placed Himself in His Father’s hands.
Trust could hardly go deeper.
Jesus used the language of this Psalm from the cross as He entrusted Himself to the Father.
At the moment when His suffering was greatest, His trust remained personal and complete.
Because Christ placed Himself in the Father’s hands and finished the work of redemption, we can entrust ourselves to God with confidence.
Truths to Hold Onto
● God is a refuge in real distress.
● Being misunderstood does not mean being unseen by God.
● Our times are held by God even when our plans are disrupted.
● Trust requires releasing what we cannot control.
● God’s steadfast love remains present in besieged seasons.
● Jesus shows us what complete entrusting of oneself to the Father looks like.
Life Application
What are you holding so tightly that your grip itself has become exhausting?
Name it specifically, then imagine placing it into God’s hands rather than demanding that you carry it alone.
Walking Deeper
● Luke 23:46 — Jesus entrusts Himself to the Father using the language of Psalm 31.
● 1 Peter 5:6–7 — We are invited to cast our anxieties upon God because He cares for us.
● 2 Timothy 1:12 — Paul expresses confidence that God is able to guard what has been entrusted to Him.
Prayer Prompt
Faithful God, my times are in Your hands. I give You what I cannot control, defend, predict, or repair. Be my refuge in distress, steady me when fear rises, and teach me to trust Your hands more than my own ability to manage the outcome. Amen.
Today’s Step
Open your hands physically as you pray.
Name one thing you have been gripping tightly.
Say: “Father, I place this in Your hands.”
Whenever you begin rehearsing control today, open your hands again as a reminder of surrender.

Today I will lead with calm trust rather than frantic control.
Carry This With You
What you cannot control is still safe in the hands of the God you can trust.
Tomorrow’s Journey
Today you placed your life in God’s hands.
Tomorrow, Psalm 32 asks us to place something else there:
Our sin.

Until tomorrow…keep walking with Him.
