HEARD
When Heaven Seems Silent
Theme
God’s silence should never be confused with God’s absence. The God who hears may already be working before we recognize His answer.
Pause
Have you ever prayed and wondered whether your words went anywhere?
David knew that feeling.
Psalm 28 begins with pleading.
It ends with praise.
Something happens between the cry and the confidence.
Prayer
Father, when heaven seems quiet, keep me praying. Remind me that silence does not mean absence and waiting does not mean neglect. Give me faith to believe You hear me before I see Your answer. Amen.
Scripture
Today’s Psalm invites us to keep calling on the God who hears, strengthens, protects, and carries His people even when His answer seems delayed.
Psalm 28 (ESV)
The Lord Is My Strength and My Shield
Of David.
To you, O Lord, I call;
my rock, be not deaf to me,
lest, if you be silent to me,
I become like those who go down to the pit.
2 Hear the voice of my pleas for mercy,
when I cry to you for help,
when I lift up my hands
toward your most holy sanctuary.[a]
3 Do not drag me off with the wicked,
with the workers of evil,
who speak peace with their neighbors
while evil is in their hearts.
4 Give to them according to their work
and according to the evil of their deeds;
give to them according to the work of their hands;
render them their due reward.
5 Because they do not regard the works of the Lord
or the work of his hands,
he will tear them down and build them up no more.
6 Blessed be the Lord!
For he has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy.
7 The Lord is my strength and my shield;
in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;
my heart exults,
and with my song I give thanks to him.
8 The Lord is the strength of his people;[b]
he is the saving refuge of his anointed.
9 Oh, save your people and bless your heritage!
Be their shepherd and carry them forever.
Read It Again
Notice the movement:
Cry → petition → confidence → praise.
Ask:
Where have I stopped praying because an answer seemed delayed?
What changes when I believe God truly hears?
Can I praise before I understand?
Pursuing His Heart
Today’s Revelation of God’s Heart
God’s heart is attentive to the cries of His people; He hears, strengthens, and shepherds those who call upon Him.
David begins almost afraid God will remain silent.
But before the Psalm ends, he declares:
He has heard.
The circumstances may not yet be completely different.
But David’s posture is.
Prayer changes more than situations.
Prayer changes the person praying.
Yesterday David waited.
Today he prayed while waiting.
That is an important distinction.
Waiting on God is not passive.
Sometimes waiting sounds like crying out again.
And again.
And again.
Carry this truth with you throughout today’s journey.
Psalm 28 begins with a frightening possibility in David’s mind: what if God remains silent?
That fear makes his prayer urgent.
He does not turn silence into distance or delay into abandonment.
He keeps calling.
Then, before the Psalm is over, his language changes from pleading to gratitude.
David has not become confident because he has mastered the situation.
He has become confident because he has remembered the character of the One listening.
The same God who hears him is described as strength, shield, refuge, and Shepherd.
Prayer therefore becomes more than asking God to act.
It becomes the place where our hearts are re-centered on who He is.
Seeing Jesus
Jesus assures us that our Father knows what we need.
Through Christ, we approach God not as strangers trying to gain His attention but as children welcomed into the Father’s presence.
Jesus teaches us to approach the Father with persistence and trust.
Because of Christ, prayer is not an attempt to persuade a reluctant God to notice us.
We come through the Son to a Father who already knows, loves, and welcomes His children.
Truths to Hold Onto

● Delay should not automatically be interpreted as absence.
● Prayer can change our posture before it changes our circumstances.
● God is both strength for today and Shepherd for the long journey.
● Faith can begin praising before every question has been answered.
● Through Christ, we are welcomed into the Father’s presence.

Prayer Prompt
Father, keep me faithful in prayer when answers seem delayed. Guard me from interpreting silence as abandonment. Let confidence in Your character become stronger than my impatience, and teach me to trust that You hear, strengthen, and carry me. Amen.
Today’s Step
Write down one prayer you have nearly stopped praying.
Underneath it write: “God hears me.”
Pray about it again today.
Then spend one quiet minute thanking God for His attention before asking Him for an outcome.
