God’s Hand in Loss and Life’s Unexpected Turns
Ruth: A Journey from Moab to Promise
Day 3 – God’s Hand in Loss and Life’s Unexpected Turns
Scripture:
“But Elimelek, Naomi’s husband, died, and she was left with her two sons. They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years, both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband.” — Ruth 1:3–5 (NIV)
Reflection:
Naomi faced unimaginable loss: her husband and both sons died in a foreign land. Her “pleasantness” seemed gone, and the famine of life pressed in on every side. Yet in these verses, God is quietly preparing the stage for redemption.
The names here carry meaning:
Ruth – “Friend” or “Companion,” a person who will become a source of loyalty, faithfulness, and blessing.
Orpah – “Fawn” (symbolically turning back), representing the human tendency to retreat in the face of uncertainty.
Even in loss, God is orchestrating the relationships that will guide Naomi—and ultimately Ruth—into His plan. What seems like emptiness may actually be preparation for profound restoration.
Observation:
Loss can feel like the end, but God often works through grief to redirect us.
The people we meet in hardship—our “Ruths”—can become instruments of God’s provision and blessing.
Life’s difficult turns reveal what truly matters: faith, loyalty, and perspective.
Life Application:
Have you experienced a season where loss or disappointment made you question God’s plan? Consider how your perspective can either pull you back to “Moab” or forward toward God’s promise. Trust that God is at work, even when the path seems broken.
Scripture Connections:
Romans 8:28 – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Psalm 147:3 – “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
Isaiah 43:19 – “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”
Prayer Prompt:
Lord, in my seasons of loss, help me to see Your hand at work. Surround me with people who reflect Your faithfulness, and give me the courage to keep moving forward, trusting Your plan.
Action Step:
Identify one loss in your life that still weighs on you. Ask God to reveal how He might be using it to redirect, refine, or prepare you for a greater blessing. Write it down and pray for a fresh perspective today.
